Make your own bird feeder!
The dead of winter is when the birds of New England could use the most help from humans and our feeding contraptions.
One easy way to make a bird feeder is to start with a hollow cardboard cylinder, maybe from a toilet paper roll or cut up from a wrapping paper tube.
Coat the tube in peanut butter. (Instead of peanut butter you can also use a cooking shortening like Crisco.)
Spread out a cookie sheet and pour some wild bird seed into the pan. Then roll the tube in the seed.
Once the tube is covered with seeds loops some string through and tie a knot.
Your bird feeder is now ready to hang out in your yard. Best to put it somewhere that's not too windy so it's easier for birds to eat. Place it across a window if you can and see what kind of birds stop by.
Feel free to snack on the peanut butter as you go along. Please save the seeds for the birds though!
