Keeping warm with snack-filled "campfires"

Followed the lead of the Wolves and Tigers last year, the Bear den spent part of a recent meeting building "campfires" out of snacks. Potato sticks served as kindling, while pretzels were sticks and log as marshmallows ringed their fire pits like stones. Red licorice took the place of actual flames, of course, and cheerios were finally added to the mix to represent the charcoal left behind. Ever mindful of safety, each Scout also had water handy to extinguish the fire if needed (or he got thirsty).

Crow Hill Hike

Under sunny skies and through fresh snow, Scouts from Pack 70 hiked to the top of Crow Hill in Worcester. Siblings and parents also joined in the winter fun, enjoying the panoramic view where many folks could see their homes. Our next hike is planned for Saturday, Feb. 21, 9:30 am at the Audobon Broad Meadow Brook Conservatory on Massasoit Ave. (If there's still enough snow we will be renting snowshoes!)

Eagle Lake Hike

Scouts had a blast hiking the 2.5 mile figure eight loop at the Eagle Lake Wildlife Sanctuary in Holden. There was enough snow on the ground that Scouts could try to determine what animals were leaving tracks. They found dog, cat, racoon and (we think) chipmunk tracks. Each Scout also took a turn guiding the group with the "Staff of Leadership." Sometimes the trail was hard to find due to the snow, so keeping an eye out for the blue or yellow blazes with teamwork was essential!

Raingutter Regatta!

Scouts had a blast racing their trimarans in an evening of friendly competition and doing your best. We're happy to report that there were no sinkings or shark sightings. Some Cub Scouts do seem to have a lot more hot air than others though...

Special thank you to Akela Sal for conducting a science corner teaching each of the dens some of the basics of fluid mechanics.

Cedar Hill and Crane Swamp hike

Brisk conditions couldn't stop intrepid Cub Scouts from Pack 70 making it to the top of Cedar Hill in Northborough with a return trip through Crane Swamp. (The adults and one younger brother managed to keep up as well.)

Our next hike is planned for Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Eagle Lake Wildlife Sanctuary in Holden.
